SHORT SYNOPSIS

On Christmas Eve in 1932, at the Hotel Palace in New York, after a rescue mission gone wrong, Wily, Santa’s favorite elf, completely breaks down and gets disillusioned with children. Since then, she has not been interested in anything else, but to play increasingly more harsh and tasteless pranks on her companions. 90 years later, she manages to set a suburban house on fire. She also drags her best friend, the innocent Blabber, into her latest shenanigan. Santa decides to expel the two elves into the human world and make them find a small child, in order to save his soul. If they fail, they will be in exile forever.

Meanwhile, Oscar, the 9-year-old orphaned rascal, tries to get some money by pickpocketing. Nobody wants to adopt him. The elves find the boy in the orphanage, where they recognize that he might be the mission. But a customer arrives, who offers loads of cash for children. The elves and the boy – no matter how much they wish not to – must stick together and flee, while 3 tough-looking Italian gangsters are sent after them to promptly catch and bring the boy back to the customer. At the same time a woman and a man unexpectedly meet again, who turn out to have lost their son long ago in a kidnapping incident.

LONG SYNOPSIS

On Christmas Eve in 1932, at the Hotel Palace in New York, after a rescue mission gone wrong, Wily, Santa’s favorite elf, completely breaks down and gets disillusioned with children. Since then, she has not been interested in anything else, but to play increasingly more harsh and tasteless pranks on her companions, jeopardizing Christmas every year.

90 years later, exactly on Christmas Eve, Wily manages to set a suburban house on fire; and what’s more, she also drags her best friend, the innocent Blabber, into her latest shenanigan. Even though Santa is heart-broken, he decides to expel the two elves into the human world and make them find a small child, in order to save his soul and make him a good person. If they succeed by Christmas Eve the following year, they will be allowed to return to Santa’s realm. However, if they fail, they will be in exile forever, without magic powers and pointed ears.

Instead of fulfilling the real mission, the two elves choose personal entertainment. They hang around on the seashore, while they try to earn some money to finance their trip around the world. Meanwhile, in Budapest, Oscar, the 9-year-old orphaned rascal, tries to get some money by pickpocketing, so that he could help his friends. Nobody wants to adopt him, and the headmistress, Madame D’Larosa, also has a completely different future planned out for the boy. A customer arrives, who offers loads of cash for children whom nobody wants, so that he can take them somewhere, from where they can never return.

Just a few days before Christmas, Wily and Blabber arrive in Budapest as complete bums. They are about to give up on ever succeeding in their mission. The only thing they can concentrate on: food and their rumbling bellies. So, they steal clothes, and try to get some lunch in a fancy expensive hotel using the credit card of an Arab sheikh.

That is when they bump into Tommy and Emily, who have just met for the first time after six years. They used to love each other very much, but a past tragedy made them part. Old emotions burst out in them, so Emily starts to escape again, meanwhile the elves, still on the verge of starving, are thrown out of the hotel.

The two elves try to buy a few bites to eat with their leftover cash, when Oscar bumps into them and steals their last penny. The elves find the boy in the orphanage, where they recognize that he might be the mission. However, the customer, Mr Garibaldi, arrives to pick up Oscar. The elves and the boy – no matter how much they wish not to – must stick together and flee, while 3 tough-looking Italian gangsters are sent after them to promptly catch and bring the boy back to the customer.

The two elves deliver Oscar to Tommy and Emily in a decorative box, because they believe their mission is to find a family for the orphan. However, Oscar has absolutely no intention of getting a family, so he almost immediately gets away from the couple, who turn out to have lost their son long ago in a kidnapping incident.

At this point, the 3 gangsters almost manage to catch Oscar, but the two elves intervene and they start escaping together again. They try to get a head start in a police motorboat on the Danube, then in a car downtown, while not only the gangsters, but also the police are in pursuit of them now. Finally, they steal a train and using their last miracle, they suddenly appear among the northern mountains. By this time, the elves are so exhausted and hungry that they quarrel and split up.

Blabber and Oscar head home to Santa to ask for help; Wily tries to get some food in a snow-covered town; Tommy and Emily start investigating after the suddenly recovered boy. In the meantime, a disguised Santa occasionally helps our heroes on their path, but the 3 gangsters are not idle either. They spot the boy up north, where Wily finds out who Oscar really is. For the first time in a long, long while, Wily finally feels and knows what her task is. So, she sets off to save her friend and the boy, before the gangsters capture them and deliver Oscar to the customer.
